A curious thing happened to me not long ago. As I walked along a rather stuffy, upmarket street in central London, complete strangers smiled at me. Odder still, some stopped and spoke to me, and made complimentary remarks. It was like being in a twisted version of a Lynx advert. I was suddenly eye-catching and attractive to both men and women. And this is why: I was carrying an armful of enormous, glorious, in-full-bloom hydrangeas. Each flower-head was about six inches across, in shades from lovat green through powder-blue to inky violet. They were lush and bursting with life, a beautiful blast of nature in the middle of the city. And people could not resist them.
Even if we don’t talk to them, flowers communicate with us. People respond to them with lit-up faces and the "aaah" noises they usually reserve for babies and puppies. A coiffed dowager-type told me they made her want to dance; a Vietnamese man said that in his country hydrangeas were special. I love flowers, but I’d always thought Interflora’s "say it with flowers" slogan was really about levering money out of repressed males who couldn’t articulate their feelings. On that day, though, over the course of a few hundred yards, I realised that flowers can speak, and that what they say makes people happy.
Flowers are the most natural form of adornment. Nature’s jewellery, if you like. People have probably been plucking them and sticking them in their hair or behind an ear since, well, since people began. They show no signs of stopping. Flower-printed fabrics are ubiquitous in the clothing business, but I’m talking here about three-dimensional blooms. Last year, Lady Gaga wore a full-face helmet made of flowers. In 2007 Alexander McQueen showed his Sarabande dress, so embroidered with artificial and fresh flowers it looked like it needed a full-time gardener. Chanel has put tweed flowers on shoes, Prada suede ones. Lulu Guinness has made handbags that look like flower pots with a single large silken bloom on top. Flowers appear on hats and fascinators at weddings and the races, on flip-flops down at the beach and on hair-slides in kindergarten.
Now that artificial flowers have become so realistic, the attitude to them has changed and we’re less snobbishly resistant to them. Perhaps that’s one reason fake flowers now feature so much in what we wear. They still keep to their rightful seasons, though. The fashion industry has failed, despite repeated
efforts, to get us to wear even prints of flowers in winter. And they remain female territory: although Paul Smith has successfully appropriated floral prints for men’s shirts, you don’t often see men wearing real (or fake) flowers unless they’re on a catwalk or in morning dress. Even if they’re carrying a bunch on Valentine’s or Mother’s Day, they tend to have that self-conscious, these-are-for-someone-else look on their face.
The story of Western art has a trail of blossoms running through it: Botticelli’s possibly pregnant Primavera, Rembrandt’s portraits of his wife Saskia as Flora, goddess of flowers and spring, Manet’s Olympia, who has a bloom the same colour as her lips behind her left ear, Georgia O’Keeffe’s overtly sexual flower paintings, which depict petals like intimate folds of flesh. Flowers and fertility have always gone together, and that’s not symbolism, that’s biological fact. A flower is designed to attract pollinators with its colour and smell, and so aid reproduction. Fashion would be mad not to make use of such powerful, ready-made allure—often to the same end. In paintings of Adam and Eve there are images of fruit rather than flowers: the Fall happened in the Fall, when there were apples on the trees. Flowers are about both innocence and sexual promise, fruit is its fulfilment.

“You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses”, just like this quote says. So next time you see one of these breathtaking flowers, remembers to “take time to smell the roses.” They can change your entire day. This is why I love roses!
“Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you!” This poem has been used throughout our history to help express the loveliness of roses. I love roses because they are perfect for telling someone you love them. According to William Shakespeare, “A rose by any other name would certainly smell as sweet.” I agree with every word in this quote. The powerful fragrance of roses always stays with you. All of our senses are heightened by roses.
I love roses for many reasons. I love roses because they make an apology seem more sincere. Roses are signs of love and many people receive them on Valentine’s Days, anniversaries, wedding days, and other special events. They make marvelous gifts. Another reason why I love roses is because my grandma grows roses in the front yard so I see, smell, and touch roses all the time. Roses also make great home decorations.
The ‘Double Delight’ rose is my favorite rose. Its fragrance is fruity and sweet. I love this rose because no two are ever alike so then each one is special when you give them to people. The ‘Double Delight’ rose is a great way to tell someone they are one of a kind. I love the colors of the rose, too. The rose starts with a creamy white center and a red frame. As the flower matures, the red expands and there is a burst of color, which my eyes never get tired of seeing.
Roses remind me of many special events. On Valentine’s Day, my dad gave me roses. On my grandma and grandpa’s fiftieth anniversary they got roses as a gift. On my mother’s thirty-seventh birthday my father gave her thirty-seven roses to make that day very special for her.
Roses are special to many people including me. I love roses very much. They are always causing a sensory explosion that I can never forget. Roses are red, violets are blue, my essay is done, and it’s just for you.
I think the rose is America’s National flower for many reasons, one being its many elegant features in nature. I think that because of its fine charm, and magnificent scent, people have started to appreciate its existence. However, not only its because a scent make it admirable, but also its supply of goods that it gives to America. Roses are used in the making of food, perfume, and medicine. Rose hips are sometimes used in the process of making jam, jelly, brewed tea, and syrup. The syrup produced is very rich in vitamins. Rose perfume is made of rose oil and rose water. Rose water is used for cooking, cosmetics, and religious purposes. Also, the rose hip is used as a minor source of vitamin C, and it is being investigated for controlling cancer growth. Roses are used for many other purposes such as decorations, sentimental messages, and enhancing environments. These reasons prove that roses are important to the earth. I believe that people take for granted their beauty and smell and do not realize their usefulness.

Classical angiosperm phylogeny is based mainly on flower anatomy, and in particular, the arrangement and form of the principle parts. The fruiting body is used as well, but its structure is often apparent in the flowers. More recently, genetic studies have been employed to determine the relationship of various botanical groups to each other. Many parts of the old classification system have proven more or less consistent with these studies, but there have also been a large number of changes, even to large and well studied groups. The changes to the classical system have been far more extensive than in the animal kingdom, where the classical, anatomy-based phylogeny has held up remarkably well. As a result, botanical nomenclature has been undergoing a bit of a revolution in the last two decades, and the process (as of 2009) is still ongoing. A community known as the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group or APG has provided some centrality to this process, but there are many areas where no consensus has been reached. Botany has always been prone to what might be termed "vanity species" with some genera (e.g. hieracium, the hawkweeds) having thousands of specific scientific names. The recent trend has been to recognize certain species as highly variable; but history dies hard, especially for those who discovered and described the "species".
A flower is the reproductive unit of an angiosperm plant. There is an enormous variety of flowers, but all have some characteristics in common. The definitive characteristic of the angiosperms is the enclosed ovary, which contains and protects the developing seeds. Floral reproduction is bisexual, and flowers have "male" and "female" parts. The "male" or pollen-bearing part is called the stamen, and is composed of the filament and the anther. The "female" or seed-bearing part is called the pistil, and is composed of the ovary, the stigma, and the style. A flower may have exclusively male parts, exclusively female parts, or commonly, both. When there are separate flower types, both may occur on the same plant; occasionally a plant may bear only male or female flowers.
Surrounding the reproductive parts is the perianth, a double envelope consisting of an outer portion, the calyx, which forms the sepals, and an inner portion, the corolla, which forms the familiar petals. There may also be leafy elements, termed bracts, surrounding a flower. Individual flowers are often organized into a larger group or cluster, termed an inflorescence. The stalk supporting a single flower is called a pedicel, that supporting an inflorescence, or an isolated flower, a peduncle. A flower is the reproductive unit of an angiosperm plant. Botanists are on the case, trying to solve the mystery of the black rose: Does it exist? Has it ever? It seems that the only solid fact surrounding this flower is that people have been searching for it for centuries-and are still searching today. The first references to extremely dark red roses were made in early botanist literature, and at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, drawings of such roses were widely circulated. And, according to a spokesman of the Flowers and Plants Association, 'Black flowers were beloved of the art nouveau designers at the previous turn of the century. Victorians and Edwardians at the cutting edge of fashion collected them, going to great lengths to track down exotic species.'
Today, the desire for unique blooms continues, prompting environmental consultant James Reynolds to write in March 2005: 'Those looking for a riot of color at this year’s flower shows are in for disappointment: Black is back and this time it is set to take a hold over the nation’s gardens. Just as floral prints have been banished from the house in favor of muted tones and minimalism, so the same is set to happen in our gardens and parks, with black flowers now the must-have item.'
Through extensive and detailed research, The Quest for the Black Rose presents the complete story of the elusive flower-from the oldest historical drawings up to the most recent developments. This publication, with its stunning photography, is sure to be treasured by any rose lover . . . or anyone intrigued by a good mystery.
